Mississippi school under fire for alleged bullying of LGBT students by staff

10:46 AM Posted In , , , , , , Edit This 0 Comments »
“[The teacher] told me since she didn’t know what I was, I should be on a team of my own,” said Holmes at an SPLC press conference.
Holmes, now home-schooled, said she faced routine harassment from students and teachers. When she tried to report this to the school’s principal, she says she was told: “I don’t want a dyke in this school.”
The SPLC launched an investigation of the school after receiving Holmes’ letter, and said they had found widespread evidence of anti-LGBT bullying by staff and pupils. Some students reported that when they told school officials they were being bullied, they were told “Suck it up.”

Black History Month

Morgan Freeman perhaps said it best when he said,
Unfortunately, what little history I did have in public school was largely whitewashed.  This month, I will post about black history in an attempt to educate myself.  Please bear with me, as I am a white woman from redneckville and moved to an area where other Caucasians ask me, "So what's it like having black people as a significant minority?"  That's not hyperbole.
It is not possible for me encompass the whole experience of black, let alone an integrated American, history in one month.  I will make some mistakes, and possibly offend.  Please note that it is not my intent to do so.  I have a fairly steep learning curve on this one.

On Rudeness and Knitting in Public

12:11 PM Posted In , , , , Edit This 0 Comments »
While at a recent local knit night (knight?), the perennial topic of knitting in public came up, specifically in lectures/classes.  Nearly every knitter has come up against the perception that knitting while in the presence of others is rude.  We're going to completely bypass the history of knitting, and how "women's crafts" are believed to be kept in the home.
Knitting's for pussies
People who perceive crafting in public to be rude assume that everyone else processes their experiences the same way that they do.  For example, we all know that everyone has a different learning style (i.e. visual, audial, or tactile).  Most people fall into the former two categories, and when it comes to retaining complex material I have to take written notes.  Written, not typed, in order to properly engage my visual tendencies.  If the topic is less strenuous, then knitting helps to occupy the visual and tactile parts of my brain while leaving my auditory portion to focus on the speaker.  For example, as I write this, I am also listening to The History Channel on the TV.  That is my experience as a knitter, and how my mind works.  Your mileage may vary.
If I am unable to occupy my brain on several levels, it wanders.  If I had music playing instead of America Unearthed, I would be distracted by every other thought that came through my head or jumping up every few minutes to go do some chore that occurred to me.  (While I have never been diagnosed with adult ADD, I am pretty certain that I have at least a mild case of it).  Knitting works in much the same way for me.  As long as it's not too complex a pattern, it occupies the part of my mind that wants to wander away from the task at hand.  When I first began knitting, some of my friends were offended that I brought it to Dungeons and Dragons night.  They were convinced that I wouldn't be able to fully participate and/or would distract the group.  I made the DM a deal: if my knitting became a problem, then I would stop.  Until then, let's give it a try.  The first time I came without a project, since I had just finished one, the group called a break and told me I was to get myself to the nearest craft store and pick one up.  Without my knitting, I was fidgety, drew other players out of the game with side-conversations, daydreamed, and generally unable to sit quietly and wait for my turn.  In other words, I was more distracting without my knitting than I was with it.
Sums up most conversations with me
Most of those who cast such judgment are typically not, themselves, crafters.  They find themselves distracted by the activity.  How many of us have been approached while knitting in public with questions such as "Are you knitting?" "What are you making?" "How are you doing that?" (I get this one a lot because of my tendency to knit socks two at a time on one circular) and other variations that come from a consumerist society.  Instead of possessing the willpower to focus on the speaker/main activity, they allow themselves to be distracted by the crafter.  The resulting frustration is then directed at the crafter, who was minding their own business in the first place, rather than taking responsibility for their themselves.
They forgot "No, I will not knit for you"
Now that doesn't mean you should sit front and centre and knit, as that might be distracting to the speaker/teacher/lecturer.  As long as you aren't likely to drop metal needles down a sloped floor or constantly elbow your neighbours, there is absolutely no reason you should be considered any ruder than the person who smacks their gum, plays video games on their laptop, or texts the entire time.  You know how your mind works better than anyone else.  If you will focus and learn better while keeping your hands busy, then no one else has the right to keep you from doing so.  Unless you're in a courtroom.  They tend to frown on people bringing garrotes into courthouses.

Outrage of the Day: Lesbians Barred From Graduating

"Two female high school students in Oklahoma are firing back at their school for refusing to let them graduate after discovering the two are a couple.

According to KWTV News, 18-year-old Melissa McKenzie said she was kicked out of Del City High School in Del City, Okla., at the beginning of the semester when the principal found out she was living with her girlfriend instead of her family. The principal then told her if she returned to her family's home, she would be welcomed back to school."
Fun fact, a commenter on The Advocate left contact information for Del City school administrators. Copied and pasted for your pleasure:

Ultimately, we're really not as great as we think we are, with stats pulled from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development.
If that wasn't enough evidence for you, how about the fact that women's (especially marginalized) programs are usually the first ones to have their funding cut? Oh, and the Simpson-Bowles recommendations are basically that people should pay more out of pocket for their own health care and retirement.

Top Ten Anti-Christian Attacks in 2009

3:33 PM Posted In , , , , , Edit This 0 Comments »
Most Top X of the Previous Year/Decade lists have been: "This is the worst year/decade evar!!1!1" This one is no different. As usual, radical Christians are breaking out their soapboxes and bemoaning how mistreated they are in this country.
"10. Pro-life Pastor Reverend Walter Hoye of Oakland, CA was jailed for exercising peaceful, pro-life speech."
Actually, it was not so peaceful considering he violated a law requiring him to stay 100 yards away so as not to obstruct access to the clinic, even though he had, had a previous offense. Funny enough, he didn't win the "But it's my right to free speech!" argument. What about a person's right to medical treatment?

"9. Rev. Fred Winters was murdered while preaching in his pulpit in Maryville, Illinois."
Yes, this was a horribly tragic murder. But Terry Sedlacek was obviously suffering from some severe mental issues that his family mistakenly attributed to Lyme disease, not acting out of some deep-seated hatred of Christianity.
"8. HBO's program "Curb Your Enthusiasm" aired an episode where the main actor urinates on painting of Jesus. When confronted HBO would not apologize."
Wait, preventing patients from reaching a clinic is free speech, but making fun of people who go so far as to put a painting of Jesus in the bathroom, near the toilet no less, is off limits? The logic fail, it confuses me.
"7. The overt homosexual participation in Obama's presidential inaugural events by "Bishop" Vickie Eugene Robinson, the Gay Men's Chorus of Washington D. C., and a homosexual marching band."
The overwhelming majority of Christian presidents, the National Prayer Breakfast, the Oath of Office, and the Pledge of Allegiance must not be enough for them. Also, they seem to have forgotten that gays can be Christian, too.
"6. Police called to East Jessamine Middle School in Lexington, Kentucky to stop 8th graders from praying during their lunch break for a student whose mother was tragically killed."
Now I could not find any information on this save for gossip from purely Christian sources. Considering the school district's history of allowing time for prayer in the Board of Education's meetings, I find this story dubious in nature.
"5. Pro-life activist Jim P[o]ullion was murdered in front of his granddaughter's high school for showing the truth about abortion."
First of all, they couldn't even spell Poullion's name correctly, which inevitably calls the rest of their list and "facts" into question because one has to wonder how much research they actually did. That having been said, Poullion had also killed Mike Fuoss, the owner of a gravel company. Does this mean that he also had a vendetta against rocks? Do businesspeople now get their own martyr? The police still do not have any motives, other than the guy was off his rocker, a suicide attempt being only one indicator among several.
"4. An activist judge ordered a home school mom in New Hampshire to stop home schooling her daughter because the little girl "reflected too strongly" her mother's Christian faith."
Actually, that's not the entire story. The reason why this even went to court in the first place is because the father was protesting the fact that she did not have exposure to any other viewpoints. What it comes down to is, is that the mother did not want her in public school and the father wanted her to be able to come to her decisions as she grew up. It was a parenting conflict between divorced parents rather than the government randomly intervening in homeschooling techniques. The judge decided in favour of the father, get over it.
"3. The Federal Department of Homeland Security issued a report entitled "Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate" that labeled conservative Christians extremists and potential terrorists."
Finally, the government is being equal opportunity in it's judgment of radical groups. And with due reason. You will also note in the report the following definition:
"Rightwing extremism in the United States can be broadly divided into those groups, movements, and adherents that are primarily hate-oriented (based on hatred of particular religious, racial or ethnic groups), and those that are mainly antigovernment, rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority, or rejecting government authority entirely. It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration."
So to be labeled a Christian extremist you have to hate (which seems antithetical to a follower of Christ, but hey, what do I as a heathen know?) and reject the government. Seems pretty reasonable, and still in keeping with jihadists who hate Others and the American government. Note, that conservatives are the ones saying we should do profiling, but protest when they are the victims. Go figure.
"2. President Obama's appointment of radical anti-Christians like homosexual activist Kevin Jennings as the "safe school czar;" pro-abortion advocate Kathleen Seblius made Secretary of Human and Health Services, and Chai Feldblum, pro-homosexual and anti-religious liberty judge nominated for Equal Employment Opportunity Commission."
Yes, Obama has made appointments that reflect our multicultural and multiracial nation. How horrible of him.
"The Federal Hate Crimes Bill that attacks religious liberty and freedom of speech. For the first time in our history ministers are vulnerable to investigation and prosecution for telling the truth about homosexuality."
The Federal Hate Crimes Bill makes it punishable by federal law to harm, assault, or generally victimize someone because they might or might not belong to a "race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability of the victim..." Unless you are urging your followers to go out and attack any particular group you should be fine. Again, it makes one wonder if a) they read the law at all and b) if it's a case of the lady doth protest too much?

Outrage of the Day- Special Ed Kids Tortured

10:35 AM Posted In , , , , , Edit This 0 Comments »

"A group of parents say their children with disabilities experienced waterboarding-like torture” and other forms of abuse at the hands of two teacher’s aides at a Montana middle school.

Now, the teacher’s aides, Julie Parish and Kristina Marie Kallies, face felony charges of assault on a minor and endangering the welfare of children in connection with the alleged abuse in a special education classroom.

Witnesses say that students were subjected to water torture and forced to eat their own vomit. Further, parents say they suspect students were also confined to closets.

Parents noticed that students came home with bruises, bite marks, burnt fingertips and missing hair.

The students, who have a variety of disabilities including autism, Down syndrome and cerebral palsy, were unable to speak up about the problems due to their disabilities."

First of all, I thought that we left this shit behind in the '50's. Secondly, having volunteered with Special Olympics I cannot conceive of the type of person it would take to commit such atrocities. upon innocent children. My partner said it best, "Instead of jail, they should not be permitted to live."

Racist Mother Custody Case

11:46 AM Posted In , , , , , Edit This 0 Comments »
"WINNIPEG - The mother of a girl who went to school with white supremacist symbols drawn on her body didn't see why her daughter should have to sit next to Muslims, a social worker testified Wednesday.
Nor did the mother appear to understand why it was hateful to laugh if someone beat up a black child, the social worker told a custody hearing.
"White pride is worldwide," the social worker recalled the mother as saying during one of several interviews last year.
"It's not a crime to have pride in who I am." "
"Child services removed the children last year after the girl showed up at her elementary school with white supremacist symbols and slogans drawn on her skin in permanent marker. The social worker said the mother admitted to drawing a symbol on the girl to "deliver a message to the school."
The social worker outlined numerous conversations with the girl's mother, including one in which the woman referred to an incident where someone she knew "beat up a kid" because he was black.
"If I laughed, I am apparently full of hatred," the social worker quoted the mother as
saying."
Who the hell thinks it's funny if a child is beaten?
"The mother questioned why her daughter should have to sit next to a Muslim classmate when that child's religious beliefs ran counter to her daughter's, the worker said."
You don't want your children exposed to other religions? Simple solution: private or homeschool. Although I shudder to think of what would have happened had the girl been raised in a homeschool environment.
"Child welfare officials also allege the children were exposed to drug use, something the mother has denied saying it's "not a white thing to do." In court Wednesday, the social worker testified the mother admitted to being on anti-depressants while the girl's stepfather had done heroin and smoked marijuana."
Naturally, the assumption that only people of colour do drugs pisses me off. My experiences of working within the judicial system showed me nothing if that drug abuse crosses all racial boundaries. Then they're trying to use anti-depressants against the mother. If they're legally prescribed and kept safely out of the kids' reach, that's not exposure to drug use. That's like saying to a diabetic, "You use insulin, therefore you're exposing your kids to drugs."

Outrage of the Day- Afghan Schoolgirls Attacked

11:58 AM Posted In , , , , , , Edit This 0 Comments »
"Afghan officials accused militants of launching a poison gas attack today that caused dozens of schoolgirls to collapse with headaches and nausea as they waited for a Qu'ran reading.
The Taliban and other Islamist groups have regularly attacked girls' schools in Afghanistan, and the second apparent poisoning in two days has raised concerns that they have found a new weapon to scare girls into staying at home.
Students were gathering in the yard of Aftab Bachi school in Mahmud Raqi, in Kapisa province, for a morning reading of the Qu'ran when a strange odour filled the area. First one girl collapsed, then others, the school's headteacher, Mossena, said from her
hospital bed. Teachers told the rest of the students to go home. Mossena said she did not know what happened next because she too collapsed.
At least 98 people were admitted, including 84 students, 11 teachers and two cleaners, said Khalid Enayat, the hospital's deputy director. He said doctors were monitoring the condition of about 30 students.
The incident was the third alleged poisoning at a girls' school in a matter of weeks. Yesterday, 61 schoolgirls and one teacher went to hospital in the neighbouring Parwan province with a sudden illness that caused some to pass out. In late April, dozens of girls were taken to hospital in Parwan after being sickened by what officials said were strong fumes or a possible poison gas cloud.
"The enemies of Afghanistan are behind this poisoning," said the Kapisa education director, Abdul Gani Hedayat. "I am 100% certain it is poison. Ninety-eight people suddenly fell sick. This isn't something that happens just normally." He said blood samples had been sent to the capital, Kabul, for testing.
An interior ministry spokesman, Zemeri Bashary, said officials suspected some sort of gas poisoning in Kapisa, and police were still investigating.
The Kapisa patients complained of similar symptoms to those in the Parwan incidents, including headaches, vomiting and shivering, said Aziz Agha, a doctor treating the girls.
Sonya Sidiqi, 13, said she smelled something like cigarette smoke, "then my head started hurting and I started throwing up". Sidiqi said she was feeling better after resting at the hospital but was still dizzy and nauseous.
Another pupil, 11-year-old Tahira, said she planned to go back to school when she recovered, but was afraid to do so. "I'm going to be scared when I go back to school. What if we die?" she said.
Conservative groups in Afghanistan oppose education for girls, who were not allowed to attend school under the 1996-2001 Taliban regime. Militants in the south have previously assaulted schoolgirls by spraying acid in their faces and burning down schools. Scores of Afghan schools have been forced to close because of violence.
North-east Afghanistan, where the three recent apparent poisonings have taken place, is typically less conservative. No group has claimed responsibility for the mass illnesses.
A Parwan education official said no evidence of an attack had been found after yesterday's incident. He said one student had fallen seriously ill before the others, and suggested some of the symptoms could have been psychological. A Parwan health official said they were awaiting blood test results."

Consequences not condoms

12:02 PM Posted In , , , , , Edit This 0 Comments »
"All human actions have consequences, as we have seen amply illustrated in the world of money and economics. Bankers took risks that they thought they would never have to pay for; personal debts reached dismaying levels because borrowing and credit cards seemed easy. But consequences there will always be. And, as in the money markets, so in the field of personal relationships.
The spiralling rate of unwanted pregnancy – there are now 200,000 abortions annually, the highest number since legalisation in 1967 – as well as the exceptionally high rate of births to unsupported and very young mothers has prompted ever more energetic methods of addressing this problem. Schoolgirls in Oxford may now text the school nurse for morning-after contraception. Indeed, all women will soon be able to purchase this post-coital remedy in bulk over the internet."
This is the age old classic of, "I'm a hypocrite because I'll get up on my soapbox and tell you not to do what I did when I was your age because it's just wrong!"
She gets crazy points for comparing uwanted teen pregnancy to the recession. Then she proceeds to preach that we need to teach that actions have consequences, i.e. the threat of pregnancy rather than providing the tools and information to prevent said pregnancy and STD's. In other words, we should be warning teens, "Don't have sex because it's too risky" while shoving consumerism down their throats with promises of sex. Yes, because that has definitely worked in the past.
Evidently she doesn't have a problem with getting male erection drugs over the internet, but preventing teh babies 'n STD's is just wrong! Perhaps she's just miffed that we have accessible contraceptives?

Can't Wear A Pretty Pink Dress to Your Prom

2:26 PM Posted In , , , Edit This 0 Comments »
"(Gary, Indiana) A federal judge has ordered Gary Community Schools to pay legal fees after finding that school administrators had ignored a ruling to turn over documents to lawyers for a former student. The student is suing the district for barring him from the senior prom because he was wearing a ball gown.
Attorneys asked the court to sanction the school district, saying it could not properly prepare its case without the documents which were to have been turned over last May.
Last fall, Judge Paul R. Cherry ordered the district to turn over the files and fined the school board $540 for dragging its heels. This time the fine is expected to be substantially higher.
In December 2007, Lambda Legal filed a lawsuit on behalf of K.K. Logan challenging a Gary School Corporation policy barring clothing that advertises sexual orientation or indicates that a student’s gender is different from the student’s sex.
Logan argues that the policy violates students’ First Amendment freedom of expression. Logan also claims that his exclusion from prom constitutes discrimination on the basis of gender.
Students and teachers knew that K.K. Logan was transgendered. During his senior year, Logan attended West Side High expressing a deeply rooted femininity in his appearance and demeanor.
At school, Logan wore makeup, accessories and clothing typically associated with girls his age.
However, on May 19, 2006, Principal Diane Rouse stretched her arms across the door of the senior prom, blocking Logan’s entrance because Logan was wearing a pink gown. Classmates and friends rallied to Logan’s defense to no avail—even though a female student was allowed to attend dressed in a tuxedo.
Principal Rouse enforced a Gary School Corporation policy that forbids any clothing or accessories that “advertise sexual orientation” or “portray the wearer as a person of the opposite gender.”
Ragen Hatcher, the attorney for the school district, said the board was not deliberately trying to prevent Lambda from access to the files, but that gathering the information had taken longer than anticipated. Hatcher said that she is confident the board will win its case."
Reading this, I found nothing untoward. It sounds pretty similar to the mindset in the area where I grew up. Yeah, it's bigoted and idiotic. But stating explicitly that you have to dress according to your genitalia? In that case, girls would be forced to wear only skirts. And it's an extracurricular activity. It's not like he's disturbing gym class by wearing a cheerleader's uniform.
But when I read that a girl in a tux was allowed to attend, the neurons misfired. Explain the logic to me. No, wait. Please don't. Mind-fuckery of that magnitude should not be forced onto anyone.
The grain of salt went out the window. This just boils down to small-minded morons.

Creationism vs. Real Science Once Again

10:09 AM Posted In , Edit This 0 Comments »
"One would think that by now the teaching-evolution-in-schools debate was settled. But not in Texas, where the State Board of Education fumbled a decision on curriculum standards last week. The struggle will be resumed in March, when the board is scheduled to take its final votes on new science standards that will govern what is taught in the classroom and in textbooks.
Seven of the board’s 15 members are deemed social conservatives. What the board decides could have an impact on many other states, because Texas is a huge market for textbooks and publishers are often reluctant to produce multiple versions of the same textbook.
The voting, a preliminary test of how the culture-war winds are blowing, concerned whether to approve or amend proposed new standards that had been carefully crafted by teams of educators and other experts. The new standards dropped a phrase that had been in previous ones requiring students to study the “strengths and weaknesses” of all scientific theories. Although that language may seem innocuous, it has been construed in recent years as code words for introducing critiques of evolution theory put forth by advocates of creationism and its close cousin, intelligent design.
We were heartened when the board beat back, by a very narrow margin, efforts to reintroduce the language on “weaknesses.” But the conservative bloc immediately recouped by pushing through amendments that require students to assess the arguments “for and against” common ancestry, a core element of evolution theory, and its “sufficiency or insufficiency” to explain the fossil record. How that differs from the old language of “strengths and weaknesses” is not readily apparent.
The lesson we draw from these shenanigans is that scientifically illiterate boards of education should leave the curriculum to educators and scientists who know what constitutes a sound education."
If ya'll want your kids to be exposed to Creationism (or the vaguely politically correct terminology giving it the illusion of actual science "Intelligent Design"), here's a radical thought: TAKE THEM TO SUNDAY SCHOOL! Read your particular scriptures with them. Enroll them in fundamentalist Christian schools. Spend time with them indoctrinating them with your beliefs. Don't make public school teachers do what you think is your job for you. Quite simply, your personal laziness should not affect all children because what you really want is proselytizing in the classroom.

Justice!

"Afghan authorities have arrested 10 Taliban militants in connection with this month's acid attack on schoolgirls, a provincial governor said Tuesday.
The militants confessed and said they were paid 100,000 Pakistani rupees ($1,265) to carry out the acts, said Rahmatullah Raufi, governor of Kandahar, where the November 12 attack occurred.
The men said high-ranking Taliban officials in Pakistan paid them to cross the porous border to carry out the attack, Raufi said.
The attackers used water pistols to spray acid on girls walking to school in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar, blinding at least two of them, U.S. military officials said at the time.
Kandahar government spokesman Parwaz Ayoubi gave different figures on the number of girls injured, saying that six were burned, including one severely. He called the attackers "enemies of education."
Girls were forbidden to attend school under the Taliban, which ruled Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001, when U.S.-led forces removed them."
Good. Now how about they dunk the fuckers in acid?

Segregating LGBTQ Students

1:42 PM Posted In , Edit This 0 Comments »
"A proposed high school for LGBT students under intense criticism has been retooled in a bid to win approval. The Chicago Board of Education put off voting on the Social Justice High School—Pride Campus last month, following criticism by conservative religious groups that it was catering to “a special class” of students, and concerns by Mayor Richard Daley and some LGBT leaders that it would segregate gay students.
The new plan would see the school’s mission expanded to include all disenfranchised students and the name changed to Social Justice Solidarity High School.
The revised mission will be presented Wednesday to the Chicago Board of Education. If it is approved, it would open in 2010.
“While the school will be open to all students, its special mission will be to provide a haven where students can feel safe and valued for who they are,” the school’s new mission statement says."
While I can understand the sentiment behind the proposed school, I don't think it's a good idea and smacks too much of segregation. And do you think that the person who called me an "asshole" on this post would get upset by 365Gay.com referring to all potential students of this school as "gay" when it would allegedly include transgendered students? If so, then they should get to writing a scathing response to the article.

Girls Blinded for Attending School

"Two men on a motorcycle used water pistols to spray acid on girls walking to school Wednesday in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar, blinding at least two of them, military spokesmen said.
U.S. Col. Greg Julian said Afghanistan's National Military Command Center told him that four girls were hurt in the incident. Two were blinded and remain hospitalized, and two were treated and released, he said.
The men escaped after the attack, and no one claimed responsibility for it, but Arab-language network Al-Jazeera said Taliban militants were suspected to be responsible.
The incident occurred about 8 a.m. near Mirwais Nika Girls High School in the Meir Weis Mena district. Kandahar government spokesman Parwaz Ayoubi gave different figures on the number of girls injured, saying six were burned, one of them severely. He called the attackers "enemies of education."
Girls were forbidden to attend school under the Taliban, which ruled the country from 1996 to 2001, when U.S.-led forces removed them from power.
According to Al-Jazeera, the girls were attacked with battery acid. Two teenage sisters, one of whom suffered serious burns, were among the victims."

Gender segregation in school

10:45 AM Posted In , , , Edit This 0 Comments »
"After hearing from outraged parents of students who, without notice, were involuntarily segregated by sex at Hankins Middle School in Mobile, Alabama, the American Civil Liberties Union and the ACLU of Alabama sent a letter to the Mobile County School System today warning that mandatory sex segregation in public schools is illegal and discriminatory. The civil liberties organization also asked, under the Alabama Open Records Act, that the school district make public any and all documents relating to sex segregation policies in Mobile County schools from the past two years.
"Mandatory sex segregation in public schools is not only clearly against the law, it's also an empty promise for failing schools," said Allison Neal, staff attorney with the ACLU of Alabama. "Inevitably these experimental programs deny equal opportunity to girls and boys and distract much needed time and money from efforts that we know work like smaller classes, highly trained teachers, sufficient funding and involved parents. Sex segregation doesn't make public schools more like private schools. If some private schools provide a better education, it's because of their
resources, not because they are single-sex."
Without notifying parents, Mobile County School System segregated the entire student body of Hankins Middle School by sex for the 2008-2009 school year and failed to provide any coeducational option. In addition to segregating students for all academic subjects, the sex segregation program goes so far as to punish boys and girls who are caught speaking in the hallways.
The ACLU charges that mandatory sex segregation in public schools violates Title IX of the Education Amendments, the Equal Education Opportunities Act and the U.S. Constitution.
Mark Jones, whose son, Jacob, is a seventh grader at Hankins Middle School, is outraged that his son's school was segregated by sex. "Absolutely nothing good can come from segregating our kids. It's an outdated mode of education that sets gender equality back to the dark ages," said Jones. "I also worry how our children are supposed to learn how to behave around the opposite sex when schools like Hankins Middle School threaten them with punishment if they so much as talk to each other."
Another parent, Terry Stevens, whose son attends the eighth grade at Hankins Middle School, said, "I want my son in a coed school to prepare him for the real non-segregated world. It's simply not right that the public school system is forcing me to send him to a sex-segregated institution."

According to Jones, the school principal told him that the change was necessary because boys' and girls' brains are so different that they needed different curriculums.
A recent review of existing data by the U.S. Department of Education showed that there is no consistent evidence that segregating students by sex improves learning by either sex. Yet, school districts across the country are experimenting with sex-segregated programs, which all too often rely on questionable "brain science" theories based on outdated gender stereotypes that suggest that teachers should treat boys and girls radically differently."
I am astounded that anyone actually still thinks this. The only reason why boys and girls tend to learn, act, or think differently is because they are taught to from a very young age. In other words, they aren't addressing this alleged problem, they are creating it!
