Mississippi school under fire for alleged bullying of LGBT students by staff

“[The teacher] told me since she didn’t know what I was, I should be on a team of my own,” said Holmes at an SPLC press conference.
Holmes, now home-schooled, said she faced routine harassment from students and teachers. When she tried to report this to the school’s principal, she says she was told: “I don’t want a dyke in this school.”
The SPLC launched an investigation of the school after receiving Holmes’ letter, and said they had found widespread evidence of anti-LGBT bullying by staff and pupils. Some students reported that when they told school officials they were being bullied, they were told “Suck it up.”

Rape 'Prevalent' in Syra Conflict

7:23 PM Posted In , , , , Edit This 0 Comments »
One young Syrian girl was gang raped at a roadblock and forced to walk back home naked to reinforce her humiliation. In another case, a father shot dead his daughter as they were approached by an armed group of men rather than have her sexually assaulted.
Rape is a “significant and disturbing feature” of Syria’s civil war and a main reason why families are escaping the country, said a report by the International Rescue Committee (IRC), a New York-based aid agency.

Rapist Re-Offends, Rapes and Murders a 9-year-old

A 32-year-old man in India who had been acquitted of all charges in the rape and murder of a young girl was allegedly arrested last week for the murder and rape of another child.
Apparently, in India, a rape is reported every 20 minutes.  Think about all the ones that are not reported.

"Happy Mother's Day!" Um... No thank you?

1:26 AM Posted In , , , , , Edit This 0 Comments »
I find myself at a unique stage of my life in which most people assume I have children.  Being that I am 29, this is not an unusual presumption.  The oddity is, is that the person in question assumes that I want or will have children.  Since I work in a nursing home, I am surrounded by elderly residents and nosy female coworkers, so the following conversation (or variations thereof) occur on a regular basis.
Me: "Happy Mother's Day!"
Them: "You, too!"
Me: "Oh, thank you, but I don't qualify."
Them: "You don't have kids?" in surprise.  "Oh, you will someday," reassuringly as I shake my head.
Me: "I don't think it's in the cards for my partner and I, but that's ok."  At this point, if the person in question feels that children are necessary in order to be complete, they usually drop the subject because the ambiguous phrasing could indicate fertility issues.  (For all I know, with my health problems, this could very well be true).
For some reason, there's a part of me that just won't smile and nod.  Perhaps it's because I refuse to kowtow to public opinion that all women of childbearing age desire offspring, perhaps it's because I am opinionated, or maybe it's because I don't know when to shut my mouth.  It's part of my charm.
I don't feel a need to justify my decision, but rather I feel that others need to justify why they project the stereotype of the nuclear family onto others.  One would think that we have reached the point where women, whether single or partnered, need not defend their decision to live childfree.  Having been adopted, I am firmly of the belief that every child should not only be wanted, but also planned.  While I was certainly wanted, my biological mother could barely take care of herself, let alone a baby.
I suffer from much the same illness that plagued her, meaning that caring for myself can be a struggle at times.  I recognize that having a tiny, helpless person dependent upon me would be negative for both my and its well-being.  Not to mention that my partner does not wish to begin procreating in his early 40's.
By simply stating that I do not have, nor intend to have, children I feel I am doing my best to politely subvert the cultural paradigm without baring my soul for the scrutiny of strangers.  Perhaps next time they will ask someone if they have kids, rather than how many or how old they are.  Perhaps that person will realize that in assuming someone has or desires children they might be opening a whole can of emotional worms for other person.
Then again, I might just jump straight to grandmother considering the way my youngest cockatiel is chasing my eldest across the keyboard in an attempt to court her.  Although, judging by how she's avoiding his advances, she may just follow in my footsteps yet.

To all those who decided to make the wisest decision for themselves as an individual and their hypothetical offspring, Happy non-Mother's Day!

Outrage of the Day: Priest Orders a Hit on Abuse Victim

"A Catholic priest, facing criminal charges and a lawsuit alleging that he sexually abused a teenage boy, is now charged with attempting to hire someone to kill the youth, authorities said Tuesday."

It sounds like a bad Lifetime movie, although the term "bad Lifetime movie" is a bit redundant.

Outrage of the Day: Lesbians Barred From Graduating

"Two female high school students in Oklahoma are firing back at their school for refusing to let them graduate after discovering the two are a couple.

According to KWTV News, 18-year-old Melissa McKenzie said she was kicked out of Del City High School in Del City, Okla., at the beginning of the semester when the principal found out she was living with her girlfriend instead of her family. The principal then told her if she returned to her family's home, she would be welcomed back to school."
Fun fact, a commenter on The Advocate left contact information for Del City school administrators. Copied and pasted for your pleasure:

Ultimately, we're really not as great as we think we are, with stats pulled from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development.
If that wasn't enough evidence for you, how about the fact that women's (especially marginalized) programs are usually the first ones to have their funding cut? Oh, and the Simpson-Bowles recommendations are basically that people should pay more out of pocket for their own health care and retirement.

My Son is Gay at Nerdy Apple

A 5 year old and his mom are harrassed by allegedly Christian women because her son wanted to dress up as a female character on Halloween. Halloween for crying out loud. The fact that it's a Christian pre-school is really beside the point, as this could have easily happened in a secular setting. Boys have been suspended for simply having long hair in public schools. Possibly my favourite quote from the post is:
"...I am not worried that your son will grow up to be an actual ninja so back off."

How to Train Your Dragon

First off, it fails the Bechtel test. And before anyone says, “It was the Dark Ages, they were all misogynist pigs” not necessarily. These were the same people of the Valkyries, Freya, and the Norns. However, Astrid and the female twin were two of the best warriors. The strong female element was presented, but one of the few times that the two directly interacted was at the end when the twin hits on Hiccup and Astrid puts her in her place. Naturally, both being female they must be attracted to the strongest male and compete for his affections. On the other hand, they did have a wisewoman who would have been ubiquitous in that culture.
Just a quick rant: Vikings did NOT wear horned helmets. While it was nice to see the women running around in armour next to the men, I would have loved to have seen apron dresses. And the general untidiness and slovenly state of the characters was another misconception perpetuated. In fact, the Ango-Saxons found them to be rather fastidious because they bathed every week.

I do have to hand it to them: they certainly did their homework. The sigils on the shields, architecture, and other artistic touches were true to the time and culture. The runes were a nice touch, I believe elder futhark, but don’t quote me on that. But it has never been determined for certain whether or not they were a proper alphabet in addition to their role as a divination tool.

I absolutely loved the non-ablism aspects. As the twins noted at the start of training, scars and other marks of battle were considered heroic. While originally the loss of a limb would have severely curtailed the life and trade of a Viking, in the movie their status was not diminished. The blacksmith was not treated any differently because of his prosthetic limbs, if anything, he was respected even more for his courage in battle. Toothless was able to fly just as well as before once he and Hiccup settled into their symbiotic relationship. And naturally Hiccup was just as much a hero after losing his foot, his new prosthetic meshing even better than before with Toothless’ new tail piece.

And they get +10 geek points for the nerdy kid rattling off Dungeons and Dragons stats.

To avoid Constance McMillen bringing a female date to her prom, the teen was
sent to a "fake prom" while the rest of her class partied at a secret location
at an event organized by parents.

McMillen tells The Advocate that a
parent-organized prom happened behind her back — she and her date were sent to a
Friday night event at a country club in Fulton, Miss., that attracted only five
other students. Her school principal and teachers served as chaperones, but
clearly there wasn't much to keep an eye on.

"They had two proms and I
was only invited to one of them," McMillen says. "The one that I went to had
seven people there, and everyone went to the other one I wasn’t invited to."
The handicapped and homosexual teens were sent to a fake prom after the ACLU ruled that they could not prevent her and her date from attending.

What I don't want my tax money spent on.

Outrage of the Day-Teen Tasered and Beaten by Cops

8:50 PM Posted In , , , , Edit This 0 Comments »
"An arrest in which several punches were thrown has triggered an accusation of brutality against Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, police from the mother of the 18-year-old honor student who was taken into custody.

Police, in a criminal complaint on the incident, say "closed fist strikes" were used by the undercover police officers, but only to subdue the teenager as he tried to get away.

His mother said she plans to file a civil rights claim against the officers.

Terez Miles said her son, Jordan Miles, who is black, thought his life was in jeopardy when three white men jumped out of a car on the night of January 11 as he walked not far from his home.

"My son tried to run thinking his life was in jeopardy," Terez Miles said. "He made three steps before he slipped and fell." After that, she said, the police used a stun gun and beat him, pulling out a chunk of his hair.

The criminal complaint says the officers, considering Jordan Miles' appearance suspicious, got out of the car and identified themselves as police. He tried to flee, fell, and then struggled to escape.

The officers "delivered 2-3 closed fist strikes to Miles' head/face with still no effect," and then a "knee strike to Miles' head causing him to momentarily stop resisting," so that he could be handcuffed, the document says.

Miles' mother said the officers did not identify themselves as police to her son, a viola player and student at the city's Creative and Performing Arts High School.

The complaint says the police officers believed Miles was engaged in criminal activity and possibly armed with a "large heavy object." The object turned out to be a bottle of Mountain Dew.

Miles was charged with aggravated assault, loitering, resisting arrest and escape."

I, too, would be afraid for my life if three white people jumped out of a car and ran after me, and I am white! He was walking from home to his grandmother's, he could have been coming home or simply taking a walk. How the hell is that loitering? Considering that the kid is not that big, I highly doubt that he was thinking "I could take these guys." So why is he the one being charged with aggravated assault after he took three steps and fell?

What is even more ridiculous is that they felt it was necessary to beat him after Tasering him. In college, I had a roommate who was studying criminology and had essentially an apprenticeship with the local police force and academy. Before you could carry a stun gun, you first had to be hit with it in order to know what it feels like so you wouldn't go around hitting people with it willy nilly. (Or at least that was the requirement here). Trust me when I say that immediately after being Tasered, even at a low setting, you aren't capable of doing much unless you are on PCP, speed, or some other insane drug. So why did the officers feel that it was then necessary to beat him when he was already pretty much as subdued as he was going to get.

Even if the officers did announce themselves as such, it would have still been hard to believe them since they were plainclothes and (I am assuming here) in an unmarked car. As if their actions weren't already questionable enough, they did not even show for the hearing.

Modesty

I dress fairly modestly for a number of reasons, which may sound contradictory considering I participate in a certain four-letter acronym community. I came of age when Britney Spears was arguably at her peak, yet I, unsurprisingly, never felt the need to emulate pop stars whose music I didn't particularly enjoy. In fact, one of my father's typical rants is the physical appearances of some of my favourite bands. I can honestly say that I have no earthly idea what most of them look like let alone what they wear even to this day, which usually results in an argument because he is convinced otherwise. So I was fairly oblivious in my formative years to the "You have to wear as little clothes as possible in order to be attractive" brainwashing.
My mother instilled in me that leaving a little to the imagination is sexier than baring it all. (She should know, she grew up on Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn). Although being the incorrigible tomboy, I wore whatever was comfortable, which meant jeans and a t-shirt. At least it generally ensured that boys looked me in the eye rather than staring at whatever was popping out of my top. Some, however, needed to learn that lesson the hard way.
As an adult, we all know that I prefer to make my own clothing through knitting and sewing rather than overpay for something that was cheaply made and won't fit anyway. So my wardrobe is not limited to the fare of the local mall. (Speaking of which, I lived through the '80's the first time and have no need to relive that, thank you very much).
I respect myself enough to dress in a way that is comfortable to me, which does not include vast expanses of skin bared to every passerby. I want to be respected and valued for my mind and personality, not for my triple D's. If I am going to be on display, let it be for my intelligence first. Having somewhat outgrown the tomboy phase, I wear skirts because they are comfortable and more flattering to my figure than jeans. (Hey, with a small butt I need some help to visually balance out that chest!)
I am wondering just what possessed designers and the parents to dress their pre-teen girls like strippers? Oh right, because Miley Cyrus is doing it. Just because I tend to avoid popular fashion does not mean that the two are mutually exclusive. While I am not religiously motivated, I have found a couple of sites with fashionable examples on how to do so without needing a gynecologist to extract those pair of jeans.
Not being religiously motivated I am free of the "Oh noez! I haz to hide my hawtness from teh menz cuz they just can't help demselves!!1!1!" But it does bring a mixed blessing: at least if I am ever raped (again) they can't use the excuse of "She was asking for it, just look at how she was dressed!"

The G-Spot is a myth! Science says so!

1:16 PM Posted In , , , , Edit This 0 Comments »

"The elusive erogenous zone said to exist in some women may be a myth, say researchers who have hunted for it.

Their study in the Journal of Sexual Medicine is the biggest yet, involving 1,800 women, and it found no proof.

The King's College London team believe the G-spot may be a figment of women's imagination, encouraged by magazines and sex therapists."

My first thought was: "Were all of the researchers men?" No, seriously. I can find mine just fine. I have found those belonging to my ex-girlfriends just fine. But no, we poor widdle women are just confused by whatever Cosmo tells us.

Then I thought, "No, that's not fair. Most of my male partners have been able to find it just fine." The cynic in me (I know, it's shocking because I'm such a Pollyanna) wonders if they set out to find evidence to support their own lack of sexual prowess and knowledge in order to bolster their own pathetic egos. It's more likely that the test subjects did not find a clinical and sterile environment to be conducive to enjoyment and relaxation, as anyone who has ever had an annual will tell you.

It's not surprising, however, considering we females are so stupid that we can't even tell when we are aroused. Gee, it couldn't be at all related to the stigma that men are expected to be sexual creatures and women are not, unless there is a ring on her finger. Any witch worth her salt could tell you that most women are not in tune with their bodies, living mostly in their head, as a result of being told that we are too fat and too ugly our entire lives. Inundation of "You are not good enough" produces a schism between one's mind and one's physical being that carries over to the soul itself.

Now, if you don't believe in "New Agey crap" just imagine how this translates psychologically. The minds of women are trained over time to first divorce their mental image of themselves with their actual appearance, then dissociate the mind from the body. And we wonder why cases of eating disorders are skyrocketing.

Top Ten Anti-Christian Attacks in 2009

3:33 PM Posted In , , , , , Edit This 0 Comments »
Most Top X of the Previous Year/Decade lists have been: "This is the worst year/decade evar!!1!1" This one is no different. As usual, radical Christians are breaking out their soapboxes and bemoaning how mistreated they are in this country.
"10. Pro-life Pastor Reverend Walter Hoye of Oakland, CA was jailed for exercising peaceful, pro-life speech."
Actually, it was not so peaceful considering he violated a law requiring him to stay 100 yards away so as not to obstruct access to the clinic, even though he had, had a previous offense. Funny enough, he didn't win the "But it's my right to free speech!" argument. What about a person's right to medical treatment?

"9. Rev. Fred Winters was murdered while preaching in his pulpit in Maryville, Illinois."
Yes, this was a horribly tragic murder. But Terry Sedlacek was obviously suffering from some severe mental issues that his family mistakenly attributed to Lyme disease, not acting out of some deep-seated hatred of Christianity.
"8. HBO's program "Curb Your Enthusiasm" aired an episode where the main actor urinates on painting of Jesus. When confronted HBO would not apologize."
Wait, preventing patients from reaching a clinic is free speech, but making fun of people who go so far as to put a painting of Jesus in the bathroom, near the toilet no less, is off limits? The logic fail, it confuses me.
"7. The overt homosexual participation in Obama's presidential inaugural events by "Bishop" Vickie Eugene Robinson, the Gay Men's Chorus of Washington D. C., and a homosexual marching band."
The overwhelming majority of Christian presidents, the National Prayer Breakfast, the Oath of Office, and the Pledge of Allegiance must not be enough for them. Also, they seem to have forgotten that gays can be Christian, too.
"6. Police called to East Jessamine Middle School in Lexington, Kentucky to stop 8th graders from praying during their lunch break for a student whose mother was tragically killed."
Now I could not find any information on this save for gossip from purely Christian sources. Considering the school district's history of allowing time for prayer in the Board of Education's meetings, I find this story dubious in nature.
"5. Pro-life activist Jim P[o]ullion was murdered in front of his granddaughter's high school for showing the truth about abortion."
First of all, they couldn't even spell Poullion's name correctly, which inevitably calls the rest of their list and "facts" into question because one has to wonder how much research they actually did. That having been said, Poullion had also killed Mike Fuoss, the owner of a gravel company. Does this mean that he also had a vendetta against rocks? Do businesspeople now get their own martyr? The police still do not have any motives, other than the guy was off his rocker, a suicide attempt being only one indicator among several.
"4. An activist judge ordered a home school mom in New Hampshire to stop home schooling her daughter because the little girl "reflected too strongly" her mother's Christian faith."
Actually, that's not the entire story. The reason why this even went to court in the first place is because the father was protesting the fact that she did not have exposure to any other viewpoints. What it comes down to is, is that the mother did not want her in public school and the father wanted her to be able to come to her decisions as she grew up. It was a parenting conflict between divorced parents rather than the government randomly intervening in homeschooling techniques. The judge decided in favour of the father, get over it.
"3. The Federal Department of Homeland Security issued a report entitled "Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate" that labeled conservative Christians extremists and potential terrorists."
Finally, the government is being equal opportunity in it's judgment of radical groups. And with due reason. You will also note in the report the following definition:
"Rightwing extremism in the United States can be broadly divided into those groups, movements, and adherents that are primarily hate-oriented (based on hatred of particular religious, racial or ethnic groups), and those that are mainly antigovernment, rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority, or rejecting government authority entirely. It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration."
So to be labeled a Christian extremist you have to hate (which seems antithetical to a follower of Christ, but hey, what do I as a heathen know?) and reject the government. Seems pretty reasonable, and still in keeping with jihadists who hate Others and the American government. Note, that conservatives are the ones saying we should do profiling, but protest when they are the victims. Go figure.
"2. President Obama's appointment of radical anti-Christians like homosexual activist Kevin Jennings as the "safe school czar;" pro-abortion advocate Kathleen Seblius made Secretary of Human and Health Services, and Chai Feldblum, pro-homosexual and anti-religious liberty judge nominated for Equal Employment Opportunity Commission."
Yes, Obama has made appointments that reflect our multicultural and multiracial nation. How horrible of him.
"The Federal Hate Crimes Bill that attacks religious liberty and freedom of speech. For the first time in our history ministers are vulnerable to investigation and prosecution for telling the truth about homosexuality."
The Federal Hate Crimes Bill makes it punishable by federal law to harm, assault, or generally victimize someone because they might or might not belong to a "race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability of the victim..." Unless you are urging your followers to go out and attack any particular group you should be fine. Again, it makes one wonder if a) they read the law at all and b) if it's a case of the lady doth protest too much?

No, kids, global warming is just a commie myth.

3:00 AM Posted In , , , , Edit This 0 Comments »
"Until recently, the Build-A-Bearville website (part of the Build-A-Bear Workshop) featured online videos telling children about manmade global warming and the dangers it holds for the North Pole. In the videos, little animals learn about the problem and teach Santa Claus about it. The right wing has been outraged over the antics of these bears and penguins. One conservative called for a boycott of Build-A-Bear, and another said the the videos amount to “indoctrination.” In response to this right-wing pressure, Build-A-Bear has taken down the educational videos."
So now science = indoctrination to the evil communist left-wing radicals. Although anyone can see that it's really anything with which we disagree = indoctrination. Say it with me now, "The Greater Good."

"The Greater Good"

6:54 PM Posted In , Edit This 0 Comments »
I have a new philosophy when it comes to people who tout the "But think of The Children!!1!1!!" in order to justify whatever the heck their position is.

Discrimination based on sexual orientation?
"Think of the children!"
Response: "The Greater Good."

Racism?
"Think of the children!"
Response: "The Greater Good."

The possibilities are endless! And if they're bringing out the kids card as a perfectly logical and just argument with the expectation that it cannot be trumped, then this response is equally valid. This is the latest example which sparked this remark, which is particularly hilarious when the activities that she condemns in Adam Lambert for are apparently acceptable in women.

Outrage of the Day- Special Ed Kids Tortured

10:35 AM Posted In , , , , , Edit This 0 Comments »

"A group of parents say their children with disabilities experienced waterboarding-like torture” and other forms of abuse at the hands of two teacher’s aides at a Montana middle school.

Now, the teacher’s aides, Julie Parish and Kristina Marie Kallies, face felony charges of assault on a minor and endangering the welfare of children in connection with the alleged abuse in a special education classroom.

Witnesses say that students were subjected to water torture and forced to eat their own vomit. Further, parents say they suspect students were also confined to closets.

Parents noticed that students came home with bruises, bite marks, burnt fingertips and missing hair.

The students, who have a variety of disabilities including autism, Down syndrome and cerebral palsy, were unable to speak up about the problems due to their disabilities."

First of all, I thought that we left this shit behind in the '50's. Secondly, having volunteered with Special Olympics I cannot conceive of the type of person it would take to commit such atrocities. upon innocent children. My partner said it best, "Instead of jail, they should not be permitted to live."

Outrage of the Day- Baby Taken Because Mom Refused C-Section

10:51 PM Posted In , , , , Edit This 1 Comment »
"A woman in New Jersey refused to consent to a C-section during labor in the event that her baby was in distress. She ended up giving birth vaginally without incident. The baby was in good medical condition.

However, her baby was taken away from her and her parental rights were terminated because she "abused and neglected her child" by refusing the C-section and behaving "erratically" while in labor.

How is this legal?

A New Jersey appellate court has upheld the shocking ruling, and custody has been given to the child's foster parents.

The court's decision cites hospital records that describe the mother, V.M., as "combative," "uncooperative," "erratic," "noncompliant," "irrational" and "inappropriate." That's how we acted during labor, too ... but our babies weren't taken away, thank God.

The court opinion also focuses on the fact that the mother had been in psychiatric care for twelve years prior to the birth. But, as the Huffington Post points out, her psychiatric state would never have been questioned if the mother had not refused invasive abdominal surgery -- which was entirely within her rights.

Read the entire court ruling here.

Lovely, she was "irrational" and "inappropriate" for deciding what was best for both her and the child? Gah, I'm so disgusted with it all.
